Ramanathapuram Lok Sabha constituency
(Ramanathapuram Lok Sabha constituency).
(PM Modi Lok Sabha election).
Lok Sabha Election : PM Narendra Modi
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which aims to establish a strong presence in the southern region, is intensifying its strategies accordingly. The party is determined to put up a tough fight against the DMK in Tamil Nadu and secure substantial seats in the state. As part of this plan, it has been decided that Prime Minister Modi will contest from Rameswaram (Ramanathapuram Constituency), a renowned Saivakshetra (Shiva temple) in Tamil Nadu, in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. An article in the Tamil magazine ‘Malai Malar’ has been published regarding this development, and sources within the Tamil Nadu BJP confirm that they have received clear signals about this decision.
In the previous election, Modi contested from the prestigious Shaivite seat of Kashi (Varanasi), and it is expected that he will contest from both Kashi and Rameswaram this time. The BJP sources claim that Modi’s candidacy from Rameswaram will have a positive impact on voters and generate enthusiasm among their party’s candidates. These sources are confident that Modi will emerge victorious from both constituencies. Furthermore, the sources state that after the election results, Modi intends to resign from the Varanasi constituency.
The Ramanathapuram constituency, which includes Rameswaram, holds significance due to the presence of a substantial Muslim electorate. In the 2019 elections, the DMK allocated this constituency to its alliance partner, IMUL, and their candidate, Nawaz, achieved a resounding victory. Rameswaram falls within the Ramanathapuram Parliament segment (PM Modi Lok Sabha election).
In ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, Annamalai said, Modi ji is seen as an insider. In fact, if you look at the Tamil news for the last month, somebody has started a rumour that Modi ji is fighting from Tamil Nadu for one of the seats. Everywhere you go, people ask (whether PM Modi will contest from Tamil Nadu). Annamalai said PM Modi blurred the lines such as “outsider” and of regional identity.
“Caste identity, Tamil-based identity and a lot of things go into people’s minds in deciding who they vote for. But Modi ji has transcended everything. Probably he is the first outsider in Tamil Nadu. Nobody has done it. It is a sign that Modi ji has transcended everything. 2024 would be a very different election,” emphasized the Tamil Nadu BJP chief.
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had contested from Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka in 1978 after Emergency. In the 1980 general elections, Indira Gandhi contested from Medak seat in undivided Andhra Pradesh. Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi contested from Bellary in Karnataka along with Amethi in Uttar Pradesh in 1999. She had won both seats but represented the Amethi constituency.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a procession of Hindu priests from Tamil Nadu to install the “sacred” sengol, a Chola-style sceptre, in the new Parliament building last month, he may have had objectives beyond furthering the cause of Hindutva. Sources in the ruling establishment said Modi was seriously considering contesting the Lok Sabha polls next year from a constituency in a southern state, preferably Tamil Nadu. The idea, they said, is to prove that Modi is equally popular south of the Vindhyas and boost the BJP’s fortunes in a region that has largely been indifferent to the saffron surge in the north and west.
If Modi picks a southern seat to contest from, it will be a second seat for him, for he will also contest from his current constituency of Varanasi, the sources emphasised.
